Audubon Great Backyard Bird Count, Prep Session

Join Audubon Naturalists as they count water birds and land birds in Greenwich Harbor, on Friday, Feb. 15 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Ducks, geese, loons and gulls are some of the birds expected to be seen as they spend the winter on Long Island Sound.

Meet in the first parking lot on the right on Grass Island Road. Dress in warm layers and bring binoculars if you have them. (Loaner binoculars will be available.)

On Saturday, Feb. 16 from 10 to 11 a.m., come learn about Winter Bird Watching and how your family can take part in the “Great Backyard Bird Count,” one of the largest Citizen Science projects in the world, right in your own backyard and neighborhood.

Ted Gilman, Senior Naturalist at Greenwich Audubon, will introduce participants to some of the most common winter birds in our area and explain how they can count these birds this weekend and become part of the ‘Citizen Science’ team through the Bird network of Cornell University.

All participants will receive a color chart of common backyard birds and can receive instruction on how to set up a free e.Bird account with the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology to keep track of birding records this weekend and from now on both at home and around the world.

The event will take place at Greenwich Public Library Technology Learning Center, 101 W Putnam Ave.

Then, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., join Audubon Naturalists to participate in this nation-wide bird count. Attendees will learn how to identify and count our backyard songbirds at the Audubon Greenwich bird feeders, 613 Riversville Rd., and take a brief walk through their Apple Orchard.
