On Saturday, Feb. 2, public libraries throughout Connecticut and beyond will celebrate the eighth annual Take Your Child to the Library Day with free events and activities for children and families. Launched in Connecticut in 2012, Take Your Child to the Library Day has blossomed into an international celebration with nearly 1,000 participating libraries from 49 states and 5 countries. The brainchild of retired Waterford children’s librarian Nadine Lipman, the event was developed to spotlight libraries as vital community resources that enrich, educate and entertain – and to encourage families everywhere to take their children to their local libraries.

Celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day on with these great events:

Drop-In Farm Animal Craft at the Main Library, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop by their craft table to make a farm animal puppet, which you can bring to the performance of The Tale of the Silly Baby Mouse or create after the show. No registration required.

Friends Children’s Show: The Tale of the Silly Baby Mouse at the Main Library, 11 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 1:30 p.m. With bold, large-scale puppets and a live chamber ensemble, this On Site Opera production is perfect for audiences of all ages. The show is approximately 30 minutes and will include an Intro to Opera talk and Q&A. Open to all at no charge. Register in advance on the Library’s calendar for unassigned seating tickets (limited to four per person).

Valentine’s Day Card Workshop at the Cos Cob Library, 12:15 to 2 p.m. Drop in to create unique cards for your family and friends – (supplies provided). They will also have a box to fill for residents of The Nathaniel Witherell. Come and have some creative fun, investigate the library, and apply for your first library card. No registration required.

Henna Workshop (Grades 6-8) at the Main Library, 2 to 4 p.m. For centuries, mehndi, the art of henna painting on the body, has been practiced around the world, where the henna plant is believed to bring love, good fortune, and protection. In this hands-on workshop, students will learn about and practice the art using a mixture of natural henna, lemon juice, and essential oils. With proper care, your henna stain can last up to one to two weeks. Registration, using the Library’s online calendar, is encouraged.

Nappy’s Puppets presents: Jack and the Beanstalk at the Cos Cob Library, 3 to 4:30 p.m. The show focuses on Jack and his many adventures, and utilizes the ancient art of shadow puppetry in a new and innovative way. With songs and stories and well over 80 handcrafted shadow puppets, the show is sure to delight young and old. No registration required as this is a drop-in program but seating is limited.
