Peter Bernstein and Ralph Mayo will speak on “How School is Different in the 21st Century,” at The Retired Men’s Association (RMA) Meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church. The program is free and open to the community.

Two years ago the Board of Education of Greenwich Public Schools set the goal of educating all students to their full potential. The aim is for each student to reach their highest level of academic achievement and to become productive, ethical, creative, and compassionate members of society. At the heart of the district’s strategy is personalized learning, a primary means to address any achievement gaps.

Peter Bernstein, Chairman of the Board of Education, and Ralph Mayo, Interim Superintendent of Schools for the Greenwich Public School System, will discuss how school has changed under this new plan and the results of the plan to date. To further discuss the return on investment and students owning their own learning, they will be joined by three Greenwich school principals, Marc D’Amico (Glenville School), Jill Flood (North Street School) and Jason Goldstein (Eastern Middle School).

Bernstein was first elected to the Greenwich Board of Education in 2013 and re-elected to another four-year term in 2017. This is his second year serving as Chairman of the Board; he also serves as a member of the Negotiations Committee, a liaison to the RTM Education Committee. Bernstein is Senior Counsel, Investigations at MasterCard, where he provides ethics advice, counseling and training for MasterCard employees. An attorney by training, he is a member of the Bars of Connecticut, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, and New York. He served as an Assistant Attorney General for New York State and before that spent ten years in private legal practice in Washington, D.C. He is also a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP). He lives in Greenwich with his wife and two children, both of whom attend the Greenwich Public Schools.

Mayo is currently serving as Interim Superintendent for the Greenwich Public Schools. He was appointed to this position by the Board of Education, in June 2018. Mayo has educated students and provided leadership in the Greenwich Public Schools for forty-one years. As teacher and administrator at Greenwich High School for twenty-four years, Mayo was Program Administrator for Special Education, Housemaster for Greenwich High School’s Clark House, Guidance Coordinator, Athletic Director, and supported countless initiatives to improve the student learning experience and environment.

Since 2014, Mayo has been an Adjunct Professor at Mercy College. His leadership roles also include having served on the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Association of Schools. He received a B.A. from Southern Connecticut State University; an M.A. in Special Education and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from Fairfield University; and completed the NEAG School of Education’s executive leadership program at the University of Connecticut, Storrs.
