Greenwich Hospital’s New Pediatric Specialty Center is Region’s Most Advanced

We recently had the opportunity to tour the newly opened Greenwich Hospital Pediatric Clinic and Specialty Center at 500 West Putnam Avenue. Pictured at its ribbon cutting are Cynthia Sparer the SVP of the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, Norm Roth President and CEO of Greenwich Hospital and Arthur Martinez the chair of Greenwich Hospital’s Board of Trustees.

Visiting the new Greenwich Hospital Pediatric Specialty Center is like being welcomed to a toy store rather than an antiseptic medical facility. Being greeted by bright colors and teddy bears seems contrary to the traditional hospital experience.

In partnership with Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Specialty Center, Greenwich Hospital’s new state of the art facility is, in the words of Robin Bennett Kanarek, “a fabulous facility….The space is gorgeous, happy, fun, and the artwork incredible. Not only is this an outpatient general clinic, but a multi-specialty clinic for those children who require specialty care without going up to Yale New Haven (a minimum of one hour traveling time from Greenwich) or to New York City. They will even be doing outpatient checkups for children undergoing cancer treatment. This is just what is needed. Bravo!”

The space is nearly 9,000 square feet and provides families with access to nationally ranked specialties a lot closer to home. The expertise of Yale Medicine board-certified pediatric specialists is supported by a multidisciplinary team that cares for the clinical, developmental and social needs of children and families. In addition to physicians, advanced practice providers and registered nurses, an on-site child life specialist, social worker, psychologist and dietitian round out the team.

The specialties and programs at 500 West Putnam, include: Allergy/Immunology, Cardiology, Craniofacial Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Hepatology, Infusion Center, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Oncology, Orthopedics, Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, Phlebotomy, Respiratory, Rheumatology, Surgery, Urology.

Under the direction of Dr. Karen Santucci and Dr. Christopher Davison, medical director of Greenwich Hospital’s Emergency Department, children have their own entrance and waiting area, a warm inviting environment with a virtual fish tank, smaller furniture and cartoons.

“To date, the feedback we’ve received from the community, the children, their parents and the pediatricians, has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Santucci. “No one wakes up in the morning expecting to go to an emergency department,” Santucci continued. “Even for adults, it can be a frightening experience. But for children who are injured or who are really not feeling well, it can be really intimidating. That’s why we created such an inviting environment.”

The Pediatric Specialty Center is located at 500 West Putnam Ave. on the 2nd floor. For more information call 203-785-4081 or visit greenwichhospital.org
