Greenwich Reform Synagogue announces upcoming programs:

Friday, Jan. 11, 7 p.m. Guest Speaker
Dr. Batya Ungar-Sargon will speak about what the Pittsburgh massacre taught us about the American Jewish community, the growing divide between the Diaspora and Israel, and the competing ways anti-Semitism is viewed in the two communities.

She is the op-ed editor for the Forward. Her work has appeared in The New York TimesWashington PostLos Angeles Times, and Foreign Policy. Batya is an influential voice among American Jewish progressives, often writing multiple opinion columns each week in response to breaking news impacting the Jewish community, Israel, and U.S. politics.

Thursday, Jan. 17, 7:30 p.m. GRS Reads Together
Rabbi Gerson will lead a discussion on the book The Cloister by James Carroll. From National Book Award-winning writer James Carroll comes a novel of the timeless love story of Peter Abelard and Heloise, and its impact on a modern priest and a Holocaust survivor seeking sanctuary in Manhattan. Light refreshments will be served.

Sunday, Jan. 27, 9:30 a.m. Jewish Life in Eastern Europe Today
The special Sunday speaker is Rabbi Andy Bachman, former Senior Rabbi at Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope Brooklyn, and founding Rabbi of the NYU Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life. Past experience also includes work as the Director of Jewish Content at the 92nd Street Y, and a co-founder of Brooklyn Jews, an innovative outreach program for the many unaffiliated Jews who have made Brooklyn their home in the past decade. Rabbi Bachman’s current area of interest is Jewish communities in Eastern Europe — he’s been making regular trips back to Poland and the Ukraine to support them. An expert in building community. he’s currently the Executive Director of the Jewish Community Project (JCP) in Tribeca.
