Obituary: Erroll Rhodes

Erroll Franklin Rhodes (March 29, 1924 – Nov. 24, 2018) has answered to his higher calling, following a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife, Martha S. Rhodes; daughters, Harriet E. Rhodes and Mary L. Rhodes; son, Erroll A. Rhodes; grandchildren, Erroll A. Rhodes III and Lauren R. McGoveran and five great-grandchildren; nieces, Grace Rhodes and Gloria Iba and nephew Robert Rhodes.

Born in Japan to missionary parents, Erroll graduated from Pepperdine College and the Divinity School at the University of Chicago, where he took his doctorate. As an Episcopalian missionary, Erroll taught in the Christian Studies department at St. Paul’s University (Rikkyo) in Tokyo for 15 years before returning to the US in 1967 to take up the position of Resident Biblical Scholar at the American Bible Society in New York, where he honed his expertise in the history of Bible transmission and translation.

His publications include the English translations of The Text of the Old Testament and The Text of the New Testament, Translators to the Reader: Original Preface to the King James Version, Translation Criticism: The Potentials and Limitations, Scriptures of the World, and the English translation of Hebrew in the Church: The Foundations of the Jewish-Christian Dialogue.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in honor of Erroll F. Rhodes to The University of Chicago Divinity School or The Society of Biblical Literature.
