Longtime Greenwich resident and Partner at Mitchell’s Stores, including Richards of Greenwich, Scott Mitchell, has passed the Chairmanship of Stamford-based SoundWaters to Douglas Bora of Darien. Bora was unanimously elected as SoundWaters new Chairman by its Board of Directors during the organization’s Annual Meeting on Nov. 13.

As board Chairman since 2013, Mitchell shepherded SoundWaters through a period of excellent growth in students served, fundraising and awareness. The organization currently teaches the science of Long Island Sound to more than 30,000 students each year from 150 schools in 65 communities throughout Connecticut and New York. Mitchell will remain a member of the board of directors and chairman of the current capital campaign to build the SoundWaters Harbor Academy on Stamford Harbor, projected to open in 2021.

On his motivation to work with SoundWaters, Mitchell said “I have been honored to serve on the SoundWaters board since 2004 and especially for the past five years as chairman. I was blessed to grow up sailing small boats on Long Island Sound, but until I started working with SoundWaters, I had no idea how few children get that incredible experience and how critical it is to the preservation of the Sound that we get every child onto the water.” He continued to say “I am proudest that our fundraising has enabled us to work with so many thousands of students regardless of their ability to pay.”

As SoundWaters seventh board chair in its 29-year history, Douglas Bora will lead a 30-person board of directors to assist SoundWaters President, Dr. Leigh Shemitz and her team, to grow the organization’s capacity through strategic planning and fundraising. He is a longtime Darien resident, avid sailor and member of Noroton Yacht Club. He is Managing Director of Norwalk-based Spinnaker Real Estate Partners LLC, a real estate development company engaged in the acquisition, development, ownership and management of commercial and residential properties which has completed over $1.5 billion of projects since inception. On his election, he commented: “I am honored and excited for the opportunity to work with my fellow directors and with Leigh and her outstanding staff to grow SoundWaters positive impact in our communities.” About SoundWaters important mission to protect Long Island Sound through education and action, Bora said “Long Island Sound is our largest and most precious natural resource and the work we do at SoundWaters with so many young people and adults is improving the health of the Sound today and will protect it for generations.”
