Greenwich Avenue will be transformed into a mini Canyon of Heroes on June 9, as the community will celebrate and honor Greenwich High School athletic teams for their accomplishments.

First Selectman, Peter Tesei, has announced that a “Parade of Champions” will take place on Sunday, June 9, at 2 p.m.

The decision to host a parade came after the Greenwich High School Girls Swimming & Diving Team won the FCIAC and State Open Championships earlier this year, and after the Cardinal football team captured the Class LL State Championship by defeating the New Canaan Rams on Dec. 8.

The date was agreed upon after consultation between Tesei, interim superintendent of schools, Ralph Mayo, and GHS Athletic Director, Gus Lindine.

“This is an opportunity to honor the accomplishments of all of our student athletes,” Mayo said.

Mayo added that the parade also will give students the opportunity to include floats that were originally planned for the 2018 Homecoming Parade that was cancelled because of the weather

Tesei said the warm, spring weather will ensure the proper fete the athletes deserve.

The parade will muster on Lafayette Place and march south on Greenwich Avenue to the Board of Education Headquarters in the Havemeyer Building at 290 Greenwich Ave. Outside of the building, all of the athletes and their coaches will be honored by town and school officials.
