It’s the season of giving, and one Greenwich family is asking the community for help in spreading some holiday cheer.

Michael and Susan Carino, lifelong Greenwich residents, are undertaking a fundraiser and blanket drive to benefit the youth at the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich. With the help of Susan’s company, Snugglesock, which sells unique holiday themed blankets, the Carinos are donating roughly $40,000 worth of blankets to the club at the annual holiday party, on Dec. 13.

At the party, club members will have an opportunity to pick out presents for themselves or loved ones, wrap the gifts, make arts and crafts and holiday cards, all while enjoying some delicious food.

“It’s a special day for all the club members,” said BGCG Program Director, Don Palmer.

The Carinos organized a similar effort two years ago, but are now asking the public for help in order to make an even bigger impact on the community.

“I couldn’t think of a better time and better cause. In today’s day and age, the whole success of society depends on the children coming up,” Michael said. “Anything you can do to help the youth in town, especially this time of year, I think is wonderful.”

Michael and Susan both went through the Greenwich Public School system and graduated from Greenwich High School. Michael attended the Boys & GIrls Club of Greenwich as a kid and understands how vital it is to the young people in town.

“It taught me a lot. From the diverse group of children that utilize the club to all the members that actually work there, they really filled your day and gave me some good organization, some team and group skills, and it was really a productive way to grow and develop, both physically and mentally,” Michael said. “It’s something that you never forget.”

Palmer said this time of year is always special for everyone involved with the club.

“You get to see the holidays through the eyes of children, and really enjoy the excitement. They get to see Santa Claus, and it’s extra special with families like the Carinos, who really realize what Christmas is,” Palmer said. “It’s giving back to the community and to kids who might not get an opportunity to get something like a nice blanket. It’s really a great time of year to be at the club, and we’re lucky to have the support of people like the Carino family.”

Residents can drop off gift donations at the club. Michael also set up a gofundme page at gofundme.com/greenwich-childrens039-charity-drive for anyone who wants to make a cash donation.
