Leah Patiky Rubin, 93, passed away on Dec. 1. Mrs. Rubin was born in 1924 in Centerport, L.I., to Sam and Rose Patiky, the proprietors of a country general store. In her youth, Leah attended services at the Kings Park Jewish Center, founded by her father’s family. She attended Huntington H.S. and went on to earn her B.S. in Botany from Cornell. There she met her husband Jerry Rubin. After receiving their degrees, Leah and Jerry lived in Champaign-Urbana, Ill. and then settled in Port Jefferson, L.I., where Jerry established his veterinary practice. They later moved to Stony Brook, L.I., then Stillwater, OK, and finally Dallas, Texas. In her early years, Mrs. Rubin worked in her father’s store. She later worked as receptionist and surgical assistant in Jerry’s veterinary practice, then as a substitute teacher and a registered electrologist. Leah was an active member of League of Women Voters and Hadassah. She was a supporter of nature conservation, took an active interest in Native American affairs and collected Native American art. After suffering a stroke in 2000 and losing her husband in 2001, Leah moved to be near her children, first in Portland, ME, then Reston, VA and finally Greenwich, CT. She was predeceased by her husband Jerry; her daughter Marion; her son Michael and her sister Annabelle Patiky. She will be sorely missed by her surviving children, Elizabeth Rubin of Stamford, CT and Gabriel Rubin of Jerusalem, Israel; her nine grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. at Temple Sinai, 458 Lakeside Drive in Stamford. The burial will follow at Temple Sholom Cemetery on Memory Lane in Greenwich. The family will be receiving family and friends at the home of Liz Rubin after 4 p.m. and will be sitting shiva.
