Letter: Appoint Mayo Permanently

lettertotheeditor

To the Editor:

am writing to urge the Board of Ed to strongly consider keeping Ralph Mayo on as the permanent Superintendent of Schools.

I was born and raised in Cos Cob, having gone to North Mianus School, Eastern Junior High, and Greenwich High School (’85). As I recall, Ernest Fleishman was the one and only Superintendent of Schools during my entire K-12 experience – and that was a time when our schools were ranked among the top in the nation. Given that we have had around a dozen different superintendents in the last 20 years, it seems to me that the one thing our town needs above all else is stability in this position.

Interim Superintendent Ralph Mayo is in a unique position to provide that stability. Mr. Mayo is certainly qualified, though he may not have as pretty a resume as some that have come in during the search – and he is extremely well-liked by the vast majority of the school community. Perhaps most importantly, however, Mr. Mayo is a native of Greenwich. He knows the unique character and nature of each of the various communities that comprise our diverse town; and because of that, he will NOT be fazed when, for instance, a bunch of parents from one of those communities peppers him with phone calls or emails about a particular issue, as so many of his predecessors have before him.

The quality of our schools will determined by our teachers, their ability to work through this hideous new “Common Core” curriculum, our students, and their families – there is no single Superintendent who will come riding in on a white horse and make our schools great again. To reiterate, what we need more than anything else at that position is stability.

I implore the BOE to appoint Ralph Mayo to provide that much-needed steady hand at the top.
