GHS Launches Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, Fundraiser

To help those less fortunate, the Greenwich High School (GHS) Roots & Shoots Club has set a goal to collect food donations and raise enough money to provide full Thanksgiving meal baskets to over 150 families in the Greenwich community. With this in mind, the 8th Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive and Penny Wars fundraiser House competitions began Nov. 5 and will run through Friday, Nov. 16.

Money raised from the Penny Wars fundraiser competition will help pay for fresh turkeys, butter, fruit, and vegetables for each meal basket. The GHS Cardinal Cooks program will be providing fresh baked breads for each meal basket, and volunteer students, staff, faculty, and parents will deliver baskets directly to families on Monday, Nov. 19. All surplus food collected will be donated to the local Neighbor to Neighbor Food Pantry.

Penny Wars Fundraising Competition:

Collection jars for Penny Wars will be located in each GHS House office during the school day and in the middle of the Student Center during each lunch block from Nov. 5 to 16.
How does the Penny War work?:

  • Pennies go in your own house’s jar (positive points).
    • Silver coins and dollars go in other house jugs (negative points).
    • Checks do not count in the total tally in Penny Wars jugs, but monetary donations towards the Food Drive may still be made via check (see below for more information).

Food Donations Kick-Off Event & House Competition: Food Collection bins will be located outside each House office from Nov. 5 – 16. Since these events are a House Competitions, the Kick-off Party for the food donations and Penny Wars fundraiser will begin on Monday, Nov. 5 in the middle of the GHS Student Center. Winning Houses will be announced on Monday, Nov. 19. The winning house for each competition will choose a lucky student to PIE Headmaster Piotrzkowski or another administrator.

Want to help? If you or anyone you know who would like to help with this endeavor as a delivery driver, donor, or volunteer, please contact GHS Roots & Shoots Club Advisor Kathleen Mendez at kathleen_mendez@greenwich.k12.ct.us.

Donation checks can be made payable to “GHS Roots & Shoots” and delivered to Ms. Mendez in Cantor House or Karen Foster in Student Activities.

GHS Students will receive community service hours for helping.
