Greenwich Sentinel Endorsement: Scott Frantz for State Senate

We believe that there is no one better at understanding the nuts and bolts of fiscal issues and how government is actually financed than Scott Frantz. In the complicated web of taxes, bonds, federal grants, subsidies and loans, healthcare, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, etc. Frantz grasps it all.

Finance is undeniably his area of expertise and we believe he is needed in Hartford, particularly on the Finance Committee, now more than ever, to hold the line and to help educate and guide his fellow legislators. We are impressed with his willingness to put in the time necessary to educate both Republicans and Democrats and his reluctance to take sole credit for his work.

We were impressed that Frantz helped pass an Act Concerning Gun Violence Prevention and Children’s Safety and also bravely voiced his concerns that it focused too much on guns because it needed additional resources for mental health and school safety systems. This was one of the many items taken out of context that he was hit hard on during the campaign. We agree with the Greenwich Time endorsement of Frantz too that his concerns on gun storage safety are both unique and important.

Scott helps when people need it most. Understanding that he has faced loss, grief and tragedy in his own life, it is clear that this is an area of particular importance to him and something he does in a quiet and confidential way. We were moved by the letters we received from constituents he helped.

Alex Bergstein, the Democrat candidate, is articulate and passionate and she showed commitment to her campaign when she put in more than $260,000 of her own money. Unfortunately, we found the unusually high numbers used in her campaign to be unsubstantiated in almost every category. This included her claim that 98% of people she spoke with were in support of tolls; that Frantz voted 99% of the time in a particular way; or that tolls would bring in $10 billion a year, a number that is more than ten times what Governor Malloy’s own study estimated. Her lack of specificity with numbers and facts is troubling, especially when these specifics are vital to fixing the state in the coming years.

We not only believe Scott Frantz has earned another term, but that he is a vital part of any successful plan to restore Connecticut’s economic prosperity.
