The Greens at Greenwich will hold a workshop entitled, “Reflections on a Simple Twist of Fate: Literature, Art and Parkinson’s Disease,” on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., as the next in their Fall Event Series, Beyond Medicine: The healing power of empathy, touch, literature and art.

Dr. Dean Scaros, author, professor and advertising executive, will lead the workshop based on his book of the same name.   Faced with traumatic diagnosis, human beings, it seems, confront the same demons and angels. After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Scaros looked to his first love – literature and art – which helped him understand his struggle and crisis. In the workshop Scaros will explore paintings and photographs as well as prose and poetry, and how they provide an opportunity to better understand our experience with any terminal illness and even gain a measure of wisdom.

“We have been seeking meaning and solace, and have often found it, ever since we painted figures on the walls of our caves.” Says Dr. Scaros and continues, “Through the lens of great literature and art, we will consider issues that are important to us as we struggle to come to terms with the progressive, debilitating illness: issues such as personal dignity, courage, fear, hope, love, time, chance, fate and friendship to name a few.” Maria Scaros, Executive Director at The Greens at Greenwich says, “We are pleased to present this unique workshop for anyone facing a terminal illness. The creative arts therapies are an important part of our everyday programs at The Greens. The workshop presents the arts in a new way and reflecting on them affords us an opportunity to better understand our experience with any terminal illness and even gain a measure of wisdom from it.”

Dean Scaros, Ph.D., is a native New Yorker whose professional career began as a teacher and college professor. He received his A.B. from Hunter College, his M.A. from Teachers College, Columbia University and his PhD from New York University’s Steinhardt School. After earning his doctorate, Scaros shifted focus from academia to business, eventually rising to the position of president and chief operating officer of one of the nation’s largest advertising agencies. Throughout his business life, Scaros remained devoted to the arts and literature and served as visiting Clinical Assistant Professor of culture and communication at New York University. After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, he returned to his first love, literature and art, which he found to be a source of inspiration and strength.   He lives in Ridgefield.

The Workshop will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich, 1 West Putnam Ave. It is free and open to the community. Reservations are recommended. To RSVP and for more information, call 203-531-5500 or email mscaros@thegreensatgreenwich.com
