Cos Cob School to Remain Closed This Week

By Richard Kaufman

Greenwich Public Schools has announced that Cos Cob School will remain closed for at least the remainder of this week (Oct. 10-12), following a water leak due to a broken plumbing fixture in the second floor art room which occurred on or around Saturday, Oct. 6.

“It was not an easy decision to close portions of Cos Cob School for an extended period of time. However, in order to keep our children safe and provide necessary access for construction crews to expedite the restoration, it is the right decision,” Interim Superintendent of Schools, Ralph Mayo, said in a statement.

According to an update from the District, the leak was discovered on Sunday, Oct. 7, when falling ceiling tiles set off the motion detectors alerting the Greenwich Police Department.

School officials and the Greenwich Fire Department assessed the situation, and environmental and restoration contractors were secured to determine the extent of the water damage, clean-up, remediation and restoration process.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the impacted space has been identified as on the second floor art room, media center, computer room and maker space; on the first floor nurse’s office, main office, as well as three grade 1 classrooms, two kindergarten classrooms and the music room.

It has not yet been determined how long the clean-up and restoration will take to complete.

According to an update from the District, the Greenwich Boys & Girls Club has offered free childcare services for the remainder of this week at no cost to CCS families for the school-day program (8:30 a.m., to 5 p.m.). Parents are asked to email CCS Principal, Gene Schmidt, so that he can provide the number of students expected to attend the Boys & Girls Club.

Additionally, the District is working on a relocation plan for at least three grades of CCS students and staff, which involves moving them to other Greenwich public schools for a limited time while the restoration work is conducted.

According to the District, with some internal classroom relocation, the preliminary relocation plan calls for grades 3-5 to remain in the building on the third floor, which was not impacted by the leak. They will also have access to the cafeteria and gymnasium, which were not impacted.

Kindergarten would be relocated to Parkway School and Grades 1 and 2 would be relocated to Old Greenwich School.

Details are still being finalized, and the relocation plan will be presented to families of CCS students via email and during a parent meeting scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m., at the Central Middle School auditorium. A CCS staff meeting will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m., at the Havemeyer building.
