Obituary: Ann Kachaluba

It is with great sadness that the family of Ann M. Kachaluba (Chapkovich), 72, of Greenwich, CT, announces her passing on Aug. 12, 2018, in Portsmouth, N.H. after a lengthy illness. Ann was born on Sept. 19, 1945 to Joseph J. Chapkovich and Helen (Ragula) in Astoria, N.Y. Ann graduated from St. Vincent Ferrer High School in New York City, continued her education at Misericordia School of Nursing and later received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Ann’s caring and compassionate nursing career spanned over 40 years.

On Nov. 26, 1977, Ann married John P. Kachaluba, a professional firefighter in Greenwich (Local 1042), at Immaculate Conception Church, Astoria, N.Y., and then moved to Greenwich where she worked for 25 plus years at Greenwich Hospital. In addition to nursing, Ann’s great passions were competitive ballroom dancing, traveling to exotic locales, reading, attending Broadway plays and spending time with her dear family and close-knit group of friends.

Ann is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Matthew G. Kachaluba (Angie) of Barrington, N.H., step-son and step daughter-in-law, John-Paul Kachaluba (Sarah) of Carlsbad, Calif.; her beloved grandchildren Xander Braden Kachaluba, Anna Marie Charlotte Kachaluba and August John Kachaluba; her sisters Elaine Weller and Aggie (Alan) Lathrop; loving nieces and nephews as well as her beloved friends, most especially Harriet Rasch of New York, N.Y., her best friend of over 50 years. Ann was predeceased by her husband, John; her parents, Joseph and Helen Chapkovich and her parents-in-law, John and Mary A. Kachaluba.

A Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Ann’s life will be held on Friday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Church, in Greenwich. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Ann’s name to a worthy charitable organization of one’s choosing.
