Choral Society Announces Scholarship Awards Recipients

Greenwich Choral Society announced the recipients of the 2018 Nathalie Rutherford Scholarship Awards; Hannah Bein and Ryan Van Fleet. Bein is a senior at Greenwich High School and a resident of Riverside. Van Fleet is a senior at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, N.Y.

Bein has extensive experience in musical theater and in various choral ensembles. She has played roles in Hairspray, Anything Goes and Annie at Greenwich High School and in productions by St. Catherine’s Players and the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich. She is a member of the Greenwich High School Chamber Singers and has participated in the Western Regional Chorus and the All State Chorus of the Connecticut Music Educators Association. Bein’s academic and musical achievements have been recognized by her membership in the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Bein has participated in the Carnegie Mellon Music Pre-College program and the New England Music Camp. In addition, she is a member, and President, of the Temple Shalom Teen Choir. She intends to study vocal performance at Princeton University beginning next year.

Van Fleet has participated in the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Vocal Program, was a finalist in the Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition, sang in the American Choral Directors Association Senior High All-Eastern and National Honors Choirs, the Westchester Area All-State Mixed Chorus and the Masterwork Festival Chorus performance at Carnegie Hall as Ensemble Soloist. He is a member of the Horace Greeley High School Chorus and the Madrigal Choir.

Van Fleet is a Peer Leader at Horace Greeley High School and participates in such community projects as the Emergency Shelter Project, Cooking For a Cause and construction projects at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. He intends to study vocal music in college, majoring in vocal performance and music education or choral conducting.

The Greenwich Choral Society sponsors the competition for the annual Nathalie Rutherford Scholarship Award of $1,000. Any senior attending school in Fairfield or Westchester County who intends to pursue further study in vocal or choral music is encouraged to apply.
