The Greenwich Old Timers Athletic Association announces that Joe Kelly is this year’s recipient of the ninth annual Coach’s Lifetime Achievement Award. A luncheon will be held to honor Kelly on Tuesday, June 12 at 11:30 a.m., at Greenwich Country Club, 19 Doubling Rd.

Eight years ago Kelly was given the opportunity to assume the position of head coach of the Greenwich High School Rugby Team; he could see no better way to share his knowledge and experience than coaching young athletes just beginning their rugby careers. Since accepting the position of head coach, Kelly has established a winning tradition for the Greenwich High School Rugby Team. Kelly’s teams have won the State Championship and have been invited to the National Championship for six consecutive years. In May, the team will be heading to the National Championship once again in hopes of bringing home a national title to Greenwich.

Kelly has also coached rugby for Iona College, the Connecticut State All-Star team, and the Community Olympic Development Program. He served several years on the high school All American selection committee. Kelly also founded and coached both the Greenwich Rugby Summer Sevens and the Old Greenwich Rugby Community Center Fall Sevens Program.

The Greenwich Old Timers Athletic Association, with its mission of supporting youth sports in our community, established the Coach’s Lifetime Achievement Award to annually recognize an individual or individuals who best exemplified the spirit of excellence and commitment to the young athletes of our community over an extended period of time. More than simply honoring wins and losses, this award recognizes a coach’s deep understanding of character, teamwork, commitment, fairness, honor, sportsmanship, and, most of all, the love of the game.

Along with the award, each year the Old Timers make a $1,000.00 donation to a youth sports program in the community in the recipient’s name. John Kavanaugh, Harold Catanzaro, Larry Jones, Bruce Fuller, Tom Smith, Peter Gasparino, Joe Vancho, Garland Allen and Terry Lowe are the previous recipients of the Coach’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
