The Fourth Annual Greenwich Jamaican Jam fundraiser will be held on Saturday, June 2, at Riverside Yacht Club. Hosted by local Jamaican businessman, Louis Van Leeuwen, this unique event is full of Jamaican style entertainment and food, bobsled team members to mingle with (from both the men’s and women’s teams), and the chance to climb inside an actual bobsled.

The event includes both silent and live auctions, entertainment featuring MC and co-host Devon Harris, an original member of the 1988 team and inspiration behind the film Cool Runnings, the steel band Eklipse, plus the all-Jamaican dance band, Mystic Bowie and the Talking Dreads. Guests are encouraged to come in festive attire and ready to get their groove on.

This year’s fundraising effort is especially important. The Jamaica Olympic Bobsleigh team, including a talented women’s team for the first time, has just come from the 2018 Olympic games in South Korea, where both the women’s team and a skeleton team qualified. The Greenwich Jamaican Jam will fund travel and coaching, and help team members continue to fulfill their inspirational role both at home in Jamaica and throughout the world.

The team’s story reflects the indomitable nature of the human spirit, a story of those who dare to dream and believe that they can surmount their particular challenges. With this in mind the team has created a Greenwich Jamaican Jam Scholarship for this year’s fundraising event. A recipient for the scholarship was chosen from the Greenwich High School AVID program, which stands for ‘Advancement Via Individual Determination’.

The scholarship will be presented to GHS senior Aniya Stamps at the event. Stamps will be attending Norwalk Community College in the fall.
