For nearly two decades, with both the Yomiuri Giants and New York Yankees here in the United States, Hideki Matsui made a name for himself on the baseball field as a good teammate and clutch performer.

Now, he’s bringing his talents to the golf course and Greenwich to benefit two nonprofit organizations: Global Citizens Initiative, based in Greenwich, and the Matsui 55 Baseball Foundation.

On Monday, May 14, from 10 a.m., to 8 p.m., at the Tamarack Country Club in Greenwich, the inaugural “Champion A Champion Golf Classic” will take place.

This will be the second event in the Champion A Champion campaign, which is a joint venture between the two organizations, that aims to empower youth to identify and nurture their talents and find their passion. Both nonprofits share the same mission to foster critical thinking, collaboration and teamwork, so the partnership is a perfect fit.

“I want to pass on the ability to think critically and be individuals,” said Matsui at the the first Champion A Champion event last May at the Greenwich Field Club where he was the keynote speaker. “Live life the right way. I think those are the similarities with the GCI.”

Yumi Kuwana, founder of the GCI, agreed, calling Matsui a global leader, and “somebody that people aspire to be.”

The golf classic will include 18 holes of golf on the championship-level course, lunch, a post-play cocktail reception, dinner and auction.

One auction item includes a five-night stay for two in the Deluxe Accommodations at the Ritz- Carlton, Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the entire event will fund financial scholarships in both organizations.

Additionally, the GCI said they’ve reached out to Hideki’s friends to participate in the event.
