On Monday afternoon, First Selectman Peter Tesei proclaimed March 12 as Girl Scout Day in Greenwich.

The proclamation marked the 106th anniversary of the founding of the Girl Scouts by Juliette Gordon Low. In 1912, Low officially registered the organization’s first 18 girl members in Savannah, Ga. Since then, girls across America have had a place to grow and develop leadership skills.

Tesei presented the proclamation during a ceremony at Town Hall. Greenwich Girl Scouts Julie Ann Cartine, Sophie Trudeau and Laura Colombo of Troop 50100; Isabella Shanahan of Troop 50322; Rylie Shanahan of Troop 50125; Alexa Chua of Troop 50124 and Helena Sushon of Troop 50540 attended the ceremony.

The Scouts presented Tesei with boxes of Girl Scout cookies, which were adorned with stickers urging residents to practice water conservation efforts, one of the Scouts’ current projects.

“You are taking on positive endeavors for your fellow citizens,” Tesei said.

The proclamation was part of Girl Scout Week, a nationwide initiative which begins on Girl Scout Sunday and ends with Girl Scout Sabbath on Saturday. Greenwich has been doing its part to honor the Girl Scouts by hosting an array of activities for girls of all ages during the week.

On March 16 at 4 p.m., fourth and fifth grade girls are invited to meet Connecticut State Representative, Livvy Floren, and earn the Inside Government badge.

On Saturday, March 17 at 12 p.m., there will be an ice skating party held at the skating rink named for former Greenwich Girl Scout, Dorothy Hamill.
