Brunswick School Water Update

Following an independent testing of Brunswick School’s wells on The King Street Campus, there is no indication of  contamination caused by per- and Polyfluoralkyl Substances (PFAS), including chemicals found in groundwater as a result of testing at Westchester Airport, and an office building near the Kensico Reservoir, according to an update from the school.

A monitoring well at the airport recently tested positive for chemicals, possibly caused years ago by fire-fighting foam.

“These tests [at Brunswick] were performed by a fully accredited lab, and the results have been reported to the State of Connecticut. While the state had initially indicated that it would be testing our wells at the end of February, state officials have now indicated that favorable results of this testing may make their further testing at Brunswick unnecessary,” said Brunswick School Headmaster, Thomas Philip, in the statement.

Earlier this month, the school had issued an update saying that, out of an abundance of caution, the Lower and Middle School buildings on King Street would be provided with bottled water dispensers for drinking. Additionally, all kitchens on the King Street campus were supplied with fresh water from the Maher Avenue campus. Water coolers were supplied for athletics, and students were given personal water bottles to take home and refill.

In order to ensure the school’s water remains safe in the event of any future issues, the administration is continuing to explore the installation of an additional filtration system that will eliminate PFAS contaminants in any case.

“It is worth reiterating, however, that we already have a filtration system in place — and Brunswick water is currently safe and of the highest quality,” Philip said.

The school will continue to advise the community of any future developments.
