The Gabriela Dias Foundation, based in Greenwich, is partnering with Lugano restaurant on Friday, Feb. 16 to host a fundraising event from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will feature a wine tasting and short presentation by international actress, Gabriela Dias. The nonprofit’s mission is to provide disadvantaged youth, globally, with exposure to the arts both in and outside of the classroom.

The Foundation launched last fall with the building of a “cultural house” in in the region of Vale do Jequitinhonha, one of the poorest regions in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Although Minas Gerias is third in terms of development, indicators show that the education level is very low in the Vale do Jequitinhonha Region of this Brazilian state. With respect to education, a key variable to income distribution and economic growth, the situation is particularly bad according to a representative at the Foundation. Fifty-five percent of the communities in this regions have an average range of only two to three years of study. The highest percentage of illiterates in Minas Gerais are found in this region, corresponding to 30% of the people over 25 years of age in 2000.

“I’m so passionate about promoting the rights of children and adolescents worldwide,” said Dias at a recent private screening of her latest film, Burguesinha. “We are starting in my home country, Brazil, as there was a need that was presented to me and the opportunity was quickly feasible. I want the foundation to provide exposure to the arts for disadvantaged children at school and after school. I founded The Gabriela Dias Foundation in 2017 with the mission to provide once in a lifetime experiences and my goal is to provide youth with unique opportunities that they would otherwise not have.”

The wine tasting event at Lugano, 1392 E. Putnam Ave., is limited to 40 people and a reservation is required. Anyone interested in attending should send an email to the Foundation, hello@GabrielaDiasFoundation.org
