David Wallace

David William Wallace of Greenwich died peacefully at home on Dec. 24, 2017.

He was born Feb. 23, 1924 in New York City, son of the late Isabelle and Fergus F. Wallace. Mr. Wallace graduated from Yale University, School of Engineering, in 1948, and Harvard Law School in 1951. He was a member of the U.S. Supreme Court Bar.

Mr. Wallace was an Infantry First Lieutenant in the European Theatre of Operations during World War II and received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. He then was a Military Government Officer at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials.

Mr. Wallace’s distinguished career began at the law firm of White & Case, and he was quickly recruited by Robert R. Young to be General Counsel, and later Executive Vice President, of the Alleghany Corporation. His brilliant business acumen led him to leadership positions as Executive Vice President of United Brands; Chairman and CEO of Bangor Punta Corporation; Chairman and CEO of Todd Shipyards; Chairman and CEO of Lone Star Industries; Chairman of National Securities; and Chairman of Putnam Trust Company.

Mr. Wallace also was a director on the boards of Todd Shipyards, Eastern Airlines, Bangor Punta Corporation, Webb and Knapp, National Securities and Research, Alleghany Corporation, Safety-Kleen, NRM Corporation, Lone Star Corporation, Piper Aircraft, SCM Corporation, United Brands, Emigrant Savings Bank and Putnam Trust Company.

He also served on numerous nonprofit boards, including New York-Presbyterian Hospital where he was a Life Trustee, Greenwich Hospital, Smith College, Greenwich Academy, Salve Regina University and the Yale Development Board. As a founding member of the Sterling Fellows, he was a life-long supporter of Yale University as well as Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich Academy and Salve Regina University.

He was a member of The Greenwich Country Club, The Yale Club, Indian Harbor Yacht Club and The Brook.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean Ives McLean Wallace, two daughters, Mary Wallace Strizek (Dan) and Anne Wallace Juge (David) and one granddaughter, Lindsay Juge.
