To the Editor:
At this time of year, we are reminded just how special a community Greenwich is. We are reminded by the hundreds of volunteers who provide 15,000 hours of service each year to Neighbor to Neighbor, Greenwich’s food pantry and clothing room, and by the many local businesses, organizations and houses of worship that make the job of caring for our low-income residents possible. This past Thanksgiving, Kings Food Markets donated 300 turkeys to feed local families, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services provided the side dishes and St. Michaels’ Church added another 75 turkeys.
Together with dozens of volunteers, they allowed our struggling neighbors to enjoy the uniquely American holiday of Thanksgiving surrounded by good food, friends and family. Now, in the midst of Chanukah and as Christmas approaches, we are reminded of the generosity of so many Greenwich residents who refuse to allow a child to go without for the holidays. Over 800 toys were donated to our second annual holiday toy chest, allowing the parents of 400 children to rest easier knowing they will be able to provide a few gifts for their children this year. Among the donors were Sotheby’s, Garden Catering, the Greenwich Association of Realtors, Christ Church Nursery School, Whitby School and so many others, including individuals who contributed to our crowdfunding project on The Impact Vine. We also are grateful to the Sue Golden and the volunteers who helped organize and execute this heartwarming event.
Neighbor to Neighbor relies on the community to come together to address a persistent and compelling local need: to create access to healthy food and provide appropriate clothing and basic essentials for those among us struggling to make ends meet. During this holiday season Neighbor to Neighbor wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Greenwich community.
