The Junior League of Greenwich (JLG) will hold open registration only a few more weeks for its two self-esteem programs for girls in the “Positively Me” and “Positively More” programs, aimed at developing and strengthening communication and social skills and promoting healthy lifestyles amongst young girls, aged eight and nine; and those aged 11 and 12 years of age. The programs are free to students who either live in Greenwich or go to school in Greenwich. Each session will hold 36 girls and will be held at the JLG Headquarters located at 231 E. Putnam Avenue. Interested families should direct all inquiries to positivelymorejlg@gmail.com or positivelymejlg@gmail.com, including questions about being placed on a waiting list.

The “Positively Me” and “Positively More” programs help girls develop confidence and skills to make good decisions. These programs give girls in these two age groups the tools to navigate sticky social situations and lessen the escalation of conflicts in personal relationships. Through role playing, the girls can apply these life lessons and interact in safer environments, both in the elementary and middle schools.

The programs take a hands-on approach to youth development and build upon the many strengths of these girls. “When young girls gain self-confidence and resilience, they are more likely to set high educational goals,” explained Debra McLaughlin, President of the Junior League of Greenwich. “They are more likely to demonstrate strengths such as self-discipline and engage in activities that will benefit their physical, social, emotional and intellectual development.” “The program agendas are designed to help the girls become assertive, and to more effectively express themselves – all while meeting new friends and having lots of fun,” McLaughlin added.

The Positively Me program allows applicants to choose one of four two-day sessions that run Friday, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on four weekends between January and April, including Jan. 12 to 13; Feb. 2 to 3; March 2 to 3; and April 6 to 7. Third grade girls will participate in a variety of activities including song, dance, writing, crafts and other interactive and role-playing activities.

The Positively More program is for 11 and 12-year-old girls and offers a choice of four one-day sessions to be held on Saturdays, including the following 2018 dates: Jan. 27, Feb. 24, April 21, and May 12. The drop-off sessions run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch and snacks provided.

Space is limited in each session and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Parents are encouraged to register their children on line by visiting jlgreenwich.org or contacting the JLG office at 203-869-1979. In addition to the on-line registration document, families will need to complete a consent form for each attendee.

If a session needs to be cancelled due to weather or other emergencies, the Junior League of Greenwich will do its best to reschedule the girls in a later session.
