Greenwich Puts Up Double Digits in Opening Night Win On Ice

To many in Greenwich, the history of the Dorothy Hamill Rink is well-known. Initially an outdoor facility, the rink eventually got a roof and modern amenities for its time.

On Saturday night, Hamill Rink broke in a new sound system for a big crowd that saw its home tenants put on an offensive outburst.

Led by senior defenseman Connor Santry’s hat trick, Greenwich stormed to a 10-2 opening night win over St. Joseph.

The new sound system was needed to announce all of the scoring as Big Red wasted no time lighting the lamp. After a pregame ceremony to introduce those responsible for the new sound, the Cardinals made their own noise. Greenwich attacked the Cadets’ zone, with senior tri-captain defenseman J.T. Lawrence working on a strong opportunity in front of junior goalie Will Brady.

While the defense was able to poke Lawrence aside, Greenwich found the back of the net with 3:19 gone in the first, as junior defenseman Nic Pelletier-Martinelli scored on an unassisted goal.

The barrage continued just 23 seconds later, as senior tri-captain forward Alex Mozian – playing his first game since Dec. 19, 2016 – powered past Brady for a 2-0 Cardinals lead.

For Mozian, the performance was fitting, as he was injured in a game against St. Joseph nearly a year ago.

By the 5:19 mark of the opening period, Greenwich had a 4-0 lead, as Santry and forward Thatcher Danielson worked around Brady.

At that point, things got feisty as a skirmish broke out, likely due to the early Greenwich outburst. The result was a Greenwich power play, with Santra and sophomore defenseman Ryan Columbo combining to open up a 5-0 lead with 8:34 to play in the first period.

Santry’s next goal made it 6-0 at the 9:58 mark. Tri-captain Oliver Fulton joined the scoresheet with a goal just 11 seconds later.

The teams marched off into the locker room with Greenwich up 7-0.

In the second period, Greenwich continued the scoring as Columbo used a backhand shot to climb the ladder and beat Brady. Fulton and junior forward Matt Davey added goals to open up a 10-0 lead after two periods of play.

St. Joseph finally got on the scoreboard in the third period, as sophomore forward Sam Bracchi beat Greenwich sophomore goalie Ben Nash just 50 seconds into the frame. Junior Brandon Roselli netted the assist on the goal.

With the shutout snapped, second-year head coach Chris Rurak pulled Nash at that point in favor of senior Robert Bray, who finished up for Greenwich.

Roselli picked up his own goal at 6:01 to close out the scoring.

The Cardinals – picked by many to go far in both the FCIAC and Div. I playoffs – are coming off a 10-12-1 season in which hey bowed out with a first-round loss to New Canaan.

Rurak expects the team to be an offensive machine, with a top scoring line of the dynamic Mozian, who will be centered by sophomore Nikita Kovalev and junior Sean Pratley on the opposite wing.

Three our of conference matchups await with trips to West Haven on Dec. 20 and Hamden on Dec. 27. The Cardinals will close out the 2017 portion of their schedule by hosting FCIAC foe Darien at the Greenwich Skating Club on Dec. 30.

There will be a limited number of tickets available for that outdoor game.
