The goal has been reached.

Before the season began, Greenwich High School football head coach John Marinelli said the goal was to reach the state championship on Dec. 9. With Sunday’s 36-7 win at home in the semifinals against South Windsor, the Cardinals will play in their first CIAC Class LL title game since 2007.

Big Red won the coin toss and needed exactly one play to get on the scoreboard. Junior quarterback Gavin Muir found a wide open Stephen Bennett for a 63-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Zach Moore added the extra point and Greenwich led 7-0 just 17 seconds in.

Junion running back Tysen Comizio ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns, the first of which came on a 38-yard scamper on the last play of the first quarter. The play was the result of a defensive pass interference call which allowed for an untimed down.

Senior receiver Jeremiah Harris gave the Cardinals more life later in the second when he hauled in the second touchdown pass from Muir on the day. Harris scored from 23 yards out with 1:48 late in the second quarter to open up a 21-0 lead.

The Bobcats weren’t content to let that be the score to head into the locker room. Senior quarterback Connor Kapisak (17 of 36 for 163 yards, 2 interceptions) found fellow classmate Patrick Wilson for a 38-yard score. Cameron Plourde split the uprights with the extra point to end the half at 21-7.

After a penalty-filled first half and a quiet third quarter, the game took off in the fourth. Zach Moore – once again, the Cardinals’ extra weapon – drilled a 44-yard field goal with 9:21 to go to open a 24-7 lead.

That came after a diving interception by Harris off an errant pass by Kapisak. The tall South Windsor quarterback threw a second interception just seconds later, as junior defensive back Hunter Cusimano picked him off on the left side.

With the news beginning to break that FCIAC foe Darien would be waiting in the Class LL title game, Big Red went for more. Comizio scored from 8 yards out with 3:37 to go. Moore’s extra point went wide left – only the second time he has missed this season.

Not content to run out the clock, Marinelli sent the starting offense back in for the coronation. Sophomore Spencer Hartley plowed ahead for a 2-yard run to close out the game.

With the goal reached, the top-seeded Cardinals will go for the ultimate trophy. Darien – the number three seed – defeated seventh-seeded West Haven 27-13. The Blue Wave are the two-time defending Class LL champions, and have beaten the Cardinals six straight times.

The last Greenwich over Darien was a 28-7 triumph on Sep 20, 2007.

That all becomes ancient history with a win Saturday morning at 11 at Boyle Stadium in Stamford.
