The 60th season of the Greenwich Symphony Orchestra (GSO) continues with their second program taking place on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m., at the Performing Arts Center at Greenwich High School.

“As always, we’ll have an exciting roster of soloists on hand. Making his debut with us on the November 18-19 concerts with the wonderfully lyric Cello Concerto by Dvorák will be the brilliant young artist Nicholas Canellakis,” said David Gilbert, GSO Music Director.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the independence of Finland, Finlandia, by Sibelius, will open the program. The GSO will perform Sinfonietta No.2 by Laszlo Lajtha, considered along with Bartok and Kodaly, to be one of the three most important Hungarian composers of the 20th century. Lajtha was an avid ethnomusicologist who accompanied Bartok and Kodaly on their travels throughout Hungary to research the indigenous folk music of the backcountry villages and hinterlands. As a composer, Lajtha forged a brilliant style for himself, and deserves far greater recognition than he has received. His Sinfonietta No. 2, written for strings, is a real showpiece, ideally scored to display the excellence and virtuosity of the GSO’s fine string section.
