George Wharton Edwards (American, 1859-1950) Miss Victory, 1918. Oil on canvas, 48.25 in. x 42.75 in. On permanent loan from the American Legion Post 29. Bruce Museum Collection L94.35

In commemoration of Veterans Day, the Bruce Museum will offer veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces free admission to the museum on Saturday, Nov. 11. The Bruce Museum also offers free admission to all active-duty U.S. military personnel and their families with identification year-round through participation in the Blue Star Museums program.

Among the veterans expected to visit the Bruce on November 11 are leaders of Greenwich’s American Legion Post 29, and they come for a special reason. On display is “Miss Victory (1918)”, an oil on canvas painting by former Greenwich resident George Wharton Edwards that the artist donated to Post 29 and which is now on permanent loan to the Bruce Museum.

One upcoming event will be of special interest to families of World War I veterans. To help document Connecticut’s participation in that war effort, the Bruce Museum will host a “World War I Digitization Day” on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018 from 12 to 4 p.m. Organized by the Connecticut State Library and held at the Bruce, the event invites Connecticut residents to bring in their photos, letters and other keepsakes from World War I for digitization. The digital images and stories collected at the event will be added to the State Library’s online archive and made freely accessible for public use.
