The Chamber Players of the Greenwich Symphony will present “Russian Idyll” on Nov. 5 and 6 with compositions by Gliere, Hummel, Schnittke, Weinberg, Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich.

Performances will be on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. at the Round Hill Community Church, 395 Round Hill Rd. and Monday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bruce Museum.

Danny Miller, cellist and Artistic Director of the ensemble, explains the programming, “The Chamber Players have focused on music from certain countries, but never from Russia, whose composers are so established in the pantheon of classical music. This program will feature a smorgasbord of works by a wide array of Russian and Soviet composers, some of whom are not well known at all. The concert highlights the keyboard, and the tradition of pianism in Russia will be evident in the Medtner composition, Selected Fairy Tales for Piano Solo, as well as in the Rachmaninoff work and Shostakovich trio.”

Andrew Gordon, who will play the Medtner piece says, “Medtner’s music is a gift for pianists. Because he was out of print in the west for many years, each of his pieces seems like a new discovery. His “Tales” are always imaginative, beautifully written for the piano (even if sometimes technically challenging to play), and accessible to the listener. Although Medtner seemed to acquire a reputation as dry and bookish (mainly because his music is faultlessly composed), these descriptions could not be less deserved, and almost every piece is a gem.”

Tickets are $30 for adults, $5 for students; and are available at door. There will be a reception for the audience and the musicians at each concert. Further information, call 203-637-4725 or visit greenwichsymphony.org/chamber-players-greenwich-symphony
