The Greenwich High School girls’ volleyball team picked a solid time to keep the good times rolling. After coming away with three huge victories last week, the Cardinals backed it up with a 3-0 victory over Bridgeport Central High School Monday night and another shutout victory over Wilton High School on Wednesday.

“I was happy to get everybody in,” said head coach Steve Lapham about his game against the Hilltoppers. “We looked at a couple of people at future positions. I was happy and we got the victory.

Against Central, the duo of Nicole Wood and Gia Alfano each took home four aces, while Adnerys deJesus added four aces and 15 digs. Erika Hauschild netted a team-high nine kills for the Cardinals, while Lily Saleeby grabbed three kills.

As of press time, Big Red has an 12-3 record overall and are 11-2 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

In the conference, Greenwich is seeded second overall, with only St. Joseph (12-0) as the only team in front of them.

Ridgefield, with a record of 10-2, is seeded third as of press time, while Danbury is fourth with a 10-3 FCIAC mark. New Canaan and Staples are the two schools with only four conference losses and are seeded fifth and sixth, respectively.

Lately, Greenwich High School has been on fire. Back on Sept. 27, the Lady Cardinals fell to St. Joseph in a tough match, 3-2. That was the last time Greenwich lost.

Last week alone, Big Red took home three victories against Trumbull, Ridgefield and Westhill. All those teams are opponents fighting for playoff positioning.

“We came off a great week last week,” Lapham said. “We got three wins against some tough competition. I couldn’t be happier coming off that week. Now we have to bear down, get our fitness levels up and prep for the postseason. Hopefully we get a couple more victories and we can secure both FCIACs and States.”

In order for Greenwich to keep getting some victories, Lapham believes that consistency is the key.

“We are much more consistent with our serves,” Lapham said. “Our passing has always been good, but we need to clean up our hitting a little bit. That has been a little sloppy, especially tonight against Central. We will only improve in practice. We need reps and need to hit spots. We had a great practice Saturday and I was surprised that our hitting was a little shaky tonight as it was, but we moved some people around and gave different looks.”

And to say that the FCIAC is a tough league would be an understatement. The Cadets are undefeated and the top six teams have four losses or fewer. In fact, anywhere from the fifth-place team to 12th (Staples, New Canaan, Brien McMahon, Trumbull, Westhill, Stamford, Warde, Darien) have a shot at securing an FCIAC bid.

“Anybody could win it,” Lapham said. “Even teams that are ninth and 10th right now could win the thing. It’s a tough league, but I think we are in a good spot right now.”

In order to be successful down the home stretch, Lapham believes his team needs to stay mentally strong.

“We need to screw our heads on tighter, from whistle to whistle,” Lapham said. “We need to be more focused. When we are dialed in and into the game, or if it’s a big game and we are excited, our focus level is high and our performance is much better. But I am happy overall. We have a couple of losses in the FCIAC, but I’m happy. This team was inconsistent in the beginning of the season and now we are cleaning that up.”
