The Southwest Connecticut affiliate of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) monthly book club discussion is about A Common Struggle by Patrick J. Kennedy and Stephen Fried.

The public is welcome to join the discussion on Monday, Sept. 18 from 8 to 8:30 p.m. at 254 E. Putnam Ave., at Christ Church Parish House.

A Common Struggle contains Kennedy’s private and professional narratives, telling Kennedy’s philosophy that for him, the personal is political and the political personal, according to the book’s website.

It highlights the years from when he came out about suffering from bipolar disorder and addiction to present. It looks at Kennedy’s journey toward recovery and reflects on Americans’ propensity to treat mental illnesses as “family secrets,” according to acommonstruggle.com
