The YMCA of Greenwich celebrated a new century of service with a festive gala on May 12. Almost 400 guests attended “The Oyster & Pearl Gala, celebrating the YMCA of Greenwich,” held at the Greenwich Polo Club at Conyers Farm.

Sponsored by Tiffany & Co. and Culture Home by Tanja Ellis, the evening recognized people and programs that culture “pearls of the community” in one of Greenwich’s most iconic buildings. Proceeds from the event support youth and family programming such as swimming lessons, early learning programs and summer camps.

Dressed in their best “black tie and pearls,” attendees enjoyed live and silent auctions, a preview of Tiffany & Co. gems, music, dancing and a delicious dinner courtesy of Watsons Catering. The culmination of the event featured two Greenwich YMCA recognitions and awards.

Cathy and Randy Weisenburger were honored for their generous support in building the YMCA’s Olympic Pool. Since its opening in 2008, the 50-meter pool has been home to nationally and internationally acclaimed athletes in swimming, diving and water polo.

Michael Chambers was awarded the YMCA Impact Award for his work in launching the Family First Program at the YMCA’s Early Learning Center aimed at closing the achievement gap and boosting student outcomes.

“It was spectacular to see our guests join the spirit of the Y with their energy, enthusiasm and generosity,” said YMCA CEO Bob DeAngelo. “We are so grateful to our gala chair Tanja Ellis, committee, board, staff and volunteers who came together to take this year’s gala to a whole new level, raising record funds for youth and family programs which will make a huge impact on our members and the entire community.”

Founded in 1916, the YMCA is the largest community-based membership organization in Greenwich. Part of a well-known YMCA national network, the Greenwich Y has over 5000 members and growing. Its programs in healthy living and youth development seek to serve and to nurture the potential of everyone in our community, whether or not they have the ability to pay for its programs.
