The Greenwich Hospital Foundation announced that a substantial gift was received from the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Fund for the Arts and Sciences. The contribution will launch a fund drive for the Robotic Surgery Center at Greenwich Hospital to purchase an additional da Vinci robotic surgery system. The gift will also support further research and training for practitioners on leading surgical techniques made possible by this state-of-the-art technology.
“Robotic surgery revolutionized minimally invasive surgery by allowing the most difficult operative tasks to be performed laparoscopically,” said Athanassios Petrotos, MD, FACS, director of the Acute Care Surgical Program at Greenwich Hospital. “Superior visualization of anatomic structures, an unparalleled degree of motion freedom, fluorescent imaging and stability are among its major advantages. The acquisition of the DaVinci system positions Greenwich Hospital at the forefront of robotic surgery.”
Robotic technology offers patients an alternative to traditional open surgery. The potential benefits include a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, less pain and scarring, fewer complications, and a quicker return to normal activities.
The expansion of robotic surgery at Greenwich Hospital will “yield great clinical benefits to patients, which always has been of paramount importance to us and our family,” said Dr. Sackler.
Raymond and Beverly Sackler are longtime donors to Greenwich Hospital and have been instrumental in several hospital initiatives over the years. Their gifts have supported the hospital’s operating suites, medical library, and the development of a pain management center. They also recently underwrote a nursing lectureship initiated with a presentation by renowned nursing theorist, Jean Watson, PhD, RN.
