A celebration of longtime Greenwich resident Barclay Fryery and his book, Cancer Looks Good on You, will be held at the Greenwich Arts Council on Thursday, June 29 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Profits from the special edition hardcover will benefit Barclay’s vision of creating a charity focused on teen suicide prevention and supporting LGBTQ youth. (The paperback and e-book will also be released in early July.) The event is sponsored by Moffly Media, Le Penguin, Val’s Putnam Wines, and Spiked Seltzer. There is no fee to attend. Guests should RSVP to Jane Cowles at: cococowles@gmail.com

Barclay Fryery — interior designer, lifestyle expert, TV host, and “Ask Barclay” columnist — died peacefully in his home in Meridian, MS, on May 26. He was 56. Barclay lived in Greenwich for two decades, and it was here that he established himself as one of the top interior designers in the country and developed his brand. Greenwich is the setting for much of his new book, Cancer Looks Good on You: Barclay’s Guide to Cultivating Style, Sanity, Silliness and Self-Love — in Sickness and in Health, a collaboration with author Jill Johnson, written during the last two months of Barclay’s life. In it he says: “I’ve been called a Greenwich icon—I don’t know if that is true, but when I left Greenwich after 21 years, I left part of my soul there. It’s where I made all my lasting adult friendships. It’s where I did my best work. It’s where people didn’t judge me.”

Fryery was named one of the top 125 designers in America by House Beautiful multiple times. His work has been featured in Elle Décor, Celebrity Living, Greenwich magazine, and Palm Beach Cottage & Gardens, among many others. Fryery was the winning designer on the USA Network’s House Wars in 2003. He was also a guest expert on A&E’s Mansions, Monuments, & Masterpieces and appeared on numerous other shows: ABC’s Good Morning America, CBS’s The Early Show, Fox & Friends on Fox News Channel, The Flip Side and The Biz on CNN, Style Court on E!, Style & Design with Leslie Mueller, and more.
