Peter Sutton, executive director of the Bruce Museum since 2001, will discuss the current state of the museum and its vision of the future on Wednesday, June 21 at 11 a.m., at the next Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich. Sutton will speak on the development of the collections, evident in the recent series of photography shows and the exhibition “Canvas and Cast: Highlights from the Bruce Museum’s Art Collection.” He will also discuss upcoming exhibitions, including shows featuring Toulouse-Lautrec and Andy Warhol. Finally, he will offer a preview of plans for an expanded facility, still a work in progress.

When Robert Moffat Bruce deeded his home to the Town of Greenwich, stipulating that it be used as “a natural history, historical, and art museum for the use and benefit of the public,’’ he launched an institution that has been broadly embraced by the community. Over the years, Greenwich has sought to fulfill the promise of his vision. From its modest origins in 1912 the Bruce has emerged into a beloved and admired museum, with distinguished collections in the arts and sciences and a schedule of stimulating exhibitions and programs. One lifelong resident observed that “this is a landmark location that has evolved over the years into a great educational resource for families and children. Great art, great displays.”

In 1992 Robert Bruce’s home was expanded and converted to a modern facility. Today, with growing collections and the presentation of more substantial exhibitions, the Bruce is exploring opportunities to enlarge its physical space and enhance the experience of its visitors.

An art historian and authority on Dutch and Flemish art, Sutton is an experienced leader in the museum field. He has held curatorial posts in Philadelphia and Boston and was director of the Wadsworth Atheneum. He was educated at Harvard and received a doctorate from Yale. Sutton has written extensively on Northern Baroque paintings and drawings and organized many exhibitions of Dutch and Flemish art, including the “Age of Rubens” and “Drawings by Rembrandt, his Students” and “Circle from the Maida and George Abrams Collection.” He is on the Board of the American Friends of the Mauritshuis.

The Greenwich RMA offers a free program every Wednesday that is open to the public; no reservations are required. Programs take place at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich, 1 West Putnam Ave. For more information, visit greenwichrma.org or contact info@greenwichrma.org
