Calf Island Conservancy (CIC) announces that its annual Spring Spruce-Up of Calf Island will be held on Saturday, June 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Conservancy works in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. Members of the public are welcome to assist in maintaining trails and picking up debris, especially along the shore, while enjoying the natural setting.
Volunteers will board a boat, courtesy of Beacon Point Marina, at the Grass Island Public Dock (entrance off Shore Road in the Belle Haven area of Greenwich). Please arrive by 8:30 a.m. for prompt departure at 9 a.m. The boat will leave Calf Island at 12 p.m. Bring work gloves, work clothes, water, and insect repellent.
The dock on Calf Island sustained damage during a recent winter storm. Consequently, the boat to Calf Island may have to run up on the beach, and volunteers should be prepared to climb over the bow into shallow water to disembark or embark. There are no restroom facilities on Calf Island.
Space on the Beacon Point Marina vessel is limited. Please register for the island spruce-up by emailing Franklin Bloomer at hfbloomer@gmail.com. All volunteers must sign a waiver unless a previously signed waiver is on file with CIC.
