On Wednesday, May 24, “Just for GEMS,” the annual benefit for Greenwich Emergency Medical Service, will be held at Caren’s Cos Cobber, 31 East Putnam Ave. The event will take place between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Half of the day’s proceeds are donated by the restaurant’s owner, Caren Vizzo, to support GEMS, the independent non-profit organization that relies on donations to replace or refurbish one ambulance each year, and to maintain medical equipment.

The organization responds to over 6,000 emergency calls per year, and trains 4,000 to 5,000 people in CPR annually. In addition, GEMS recertifies every police officer in CPR and in the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Every police car is equipped with a GEMS-supplied AED. In addition, there are 58 public access AED’s throughout the town, also supplied by GEMS.

GEMS’ cardiac arrest save rate is double the national average. Our ambulances, often referred to as an “emergency room on wheels”, are based at four stations, staffed 24/7, enabling staff to respond to 75% of calls in five minutes or less, to initiate lifesaving measures.

GEMS Executive Director, Tracy Schietinger, and benefit coordinator, Ann Hagmann, encourage prospective diners to visit Caron’s Cos Cobber, and to enjoy excellent food and company for a common cause.
