The week-long manhunt for a man suspected of robbing a Citgo gas station and Chase Bank in Greenwich has come to a surprising end all the way in San Diego, Calif.

An investigation by the Greenwich Police Department identified the suspect as David E. Byers, 34, of Solana Beach, Calif. Using leads developed by Greenwich Police investigators with the assistance of the FBI, it was determined Byers had fled to the San Diego area after eluding police in a chase that extended from Greenwich to the Harrisburg, Pa. area last week.

According to a press release from the Greenwich police, an arrest warrant was issued by the Stamford Superior Court and it was executed, without incident, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, around 12 a.m. PST.

The GPD has an initiated a request for Byers, who is currently in custody of authorities in California, to be extradited back to Greenwich. According to the press release, Byers is being held on a $200,000 court-set, cash-only bond. He’s facing charges of robbery in the first and third degrees (two counts), Larceny in the second and sixth degrees and reckless endangerment in the first degree.

Back on Monday, April 24, Byers allegedly robbed the Citgo gas station located at 392 Post Rd., in the Cos Cob area of Greenwich around 9:15 p.m. He displayed a handgun, demanded money from the register, and fled the area.

The following day, the Chase Bank located at 1150 East Putnam Avenue was robbed by a man with a similar description around 8:45 a.m. Again, police could not locate the suspect who was last seen on foot on nearby Lockwood Lane.

On April 26, police responded yet again to the Chase Bank on reports of another robbery around 4 p.m. The suspect was able to elude police for a third straight day.

In the early evening of Friday, April 28, police activity sprang up in Old Greenwich as units were searching door-to-door for the suspect. He allegedly stole a car and engaged police in a motor vehicle pursuit, before bailing on I-95 and running on foot.

The suspect then allegedly stole a car in Port Chester, N.Y., and was spotted in Pennsylvania near Harrisburg later that night. Search operations ended in the early morning hours of April 29 when Pennsylvania Police recovered a stolen Range Rover.

GPD said in Wednesday’s press release:

“This complex case has resulted in a speedy, successful arrest through diligent investigation by the Greenwich Police with invaluable assistance provided by our partners in the FBI and members of the Connecticut State Police, Stamford PD, Westchester County PD, MTA PD and Port Chester PD.”

It’s unclear how Byers made it to the San Diego area, or how and where he was arrested. Police said on Wednesday that no further information will be released, pending the request for extradition.

Police said in the press release that it’s likely other law enforcement agencies will complete appropriate arrest warrants for crimes that occurred in their respective jurisdictions.
