Separated by just 12 hours and involving a gas station and a bank, two robberies struck the Greenwich area and local police are now saying they could be related.

Greenwich police responded to the Citgo gas station located at 392 Post Rd., in the Cos Cob area of town after it was robbed at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Monday. According to police, the suspect displayed what looked like a handgun and demanded money from the register. After taking cash, the suspect fled the area.

On Tuesday morning at approximately 8:45 a.m., police responded to another robbery call a little over a mile away from the Citgo station, this time at the Chase Bank located at 1150 East Putnam Avenue. Similar to the night before, the suspect indicated he had a handgun and demanded money. He was last seen leaving the area on foot southbound on nearby Lockwood Lane.

Units from the FBI, Westchester and Fairfield Counties, New York State and several K-9 units are assisting Greenwich police with the continued search of the suspect.

“There may be a nexus between the two cases,” said GPD spokesperson, Lt. David Nemecek. “It looks like it’s probably the same guy, at least based upon location… very similar clothing description.”

The suspect is described as a white male in his 30’s, approximately 5-foot-7 with a stocky build and attempted to cover his face with his clothing. GPD released photos from each incident on Tuesday afternoon:

“If you recognize this person or saw him prior to these events, let us know, because that could help us,” Nemecek said. “Maybe he went to a store before, maybe he stopped by another place, and maybe we can attack it from that angle.”

Greenwich police is asking the public to remain vigilant, and forward any important information to Det. Kyle O’Neill at koneill@greenwichct.org or Det. Christopher Libasci at clibasci@greenwichct.org.
