In 2008, hedge fund manager Jonathan Starr left the successful investment firm he founded in Boston to establish and become Headmaster of the Abaarso School of Science and Technology in Somaliland, the world’s #1 failed state. Abaarso has since placed over 80 students in internationally respected universities, including Harvard and Yale, and its mission and students have commanded the attention of international players, including Nicholas Kristof and Anderson Cooper.

The Nantucket Project and Greenwich-based Global Citizens Initiative welcome Jonathan Starr, author of It Takes A School, and Abdirahim Mohamed (Brown ’20), Abaarso alumnus and GCI Ambassador, on Tuesday, April 25 at 7 p.m. for a lively discussion about personal and cultural transformation and the lessons they’ve learned that could be applied around the world going forward.

“The story of Jonathan and Abaarso is one of vision, empathy and community. The level of cultural transformation that both have inspired in the region is spectacular. We are excited to provide the Greenwich community with the opportunity to hear this story first hand,” shared Yumi Kuwana, Founder and President of Global Citizens Initiative.

“The Nantucket Project is proud to partner with Global Citizens Initiative to spotlight work that is breaking boundaries and challenging the status quo,” said Scott Williams, president of The Nantucket Project. “The exciting question is, if such a success could happen in Somaliland, can it not happen anywhere?”

The Nantucket Project (TNP) Library is located at 123 Mason St. The fee for the program is $10. RSVP is required and can be made at nantucketproject.regfox.com/it-takes-a-school
