Greenwich Kicks off Earth Day Month

land-trust-earth-day-2016

Each year, in celebration of Earth Day, local officials and environmentalists put together a month-long calendar of events that runs from April until early May. “In Greenwich, the First Selectman proclaims April as Earth Day Celebration Month and the Conservation Commission assembles a calendar of events working with the environmental community,” stated Denise Savageau, Conservation Director. “Once again we have a very impressive calendar of events. Whether you are interested in swapping out your old light bulbs for energy efficient ones, learning about composting, going for a bird walk, exploring our wetlands, or joining in a March for Climate Change, there is something for everyone.”

First Selectman Peter Tesei will do the official Earth Day Month Proclamation, in coordination with the Conservation Commission, as part of the Bruce Museum’s Seaside Center’s First Sunday Science program at the Innis Arden Cottage at Greenwich Point Park on Saturday, April 2 at 1:30 p.m. Immediately following the proclamation, Eversource will present a cash award to the Greenwich Tree Conservancy, as the recipient of donations that are part of the Home Energy Solutions program. The Bruce Museum and Conservation Commission have put together full afternoon of family activities that will follow the proclamation (see calendar for details).

The year, during the month of April, the Town of Greenwich is also participating in the “Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation.” With water restrictions still in place, residents are being asked to join with First Selectman Peter Tesei and the Town’s Conservation Commission in taking the pledge to support water conservation and show that Greenwich residents care about our local water supply. The Mayor’s Challenge is a friendly competition between cities across the US to see who can be the most “water-wise.” Chief elected officials nationwide will challenge their residents to conserve water, energy and other natural resources on behalf of their city through a series of informative, easy-to- use pledges online. Towns and cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge in their population category win and are eligible for prizes including a Toyota Prius. Starting April 1, go to mywaterpledge.com and show that Greenwich really cares about water conservation.

For more information on Earth Day Month in Greenwich contact the Conservation Commission staff at 203-622-6461 or denise.savageau@greenwichct.org
