In what has become a family tradition, Quinn, Colin and Lance Hume of Greenwich donated a portion of their piggy bank savings to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Greenwich Hospital on March 3.

Nearly 12 years ago, twins Colin and Lance – who were born at 25 weeks weighing less than two pounds – spent the first few months of their lives in a NICU. The skilled and compassionate care of the NICU nurses and physicians left a lasting impression on the family. For the past four years, the boys have donated a portion of their savings to the NICU and brought flowers for the nurses and staff. The boy’s parents, Daryl and Geoff Hulme, said they hope the annual NICU visit will help their sons understand the importance of giving back to their community.

Jeanne VanSciver, perinatal senior coordinator, looks forward to the Hulme family visit every year. “The boys have a genuine interest in learning about the NICU and what we do here. It reinforces in all of us why we love what we do every day,” she said. “They have become part of our NICU family.”

Greenwich Hospital’s Level III-A NICU for sick or premature newborns is monitored 24 hours a day by full-time neonatologists, nurse practitioners and specially trained nurses. The NICU contains the most sophisticated and up-to-date equipment to treat babies with special needs.
