Greenwich Board of Selectmen Issue Statement on Recent Rise in Acts of Religious Intolerance

greenwich-town-hall-3

The Town of Greenwich sent out a press release about the recent rise in acts of religious intolerance. Below is the entire release:

The Greenwich Board of Selectmen is deeply concerned by the recent rise in incidents of regional and national religious intolerance, including anti-Semitism. We want to be clear that such acts will not be tolerated in Greenwich.

We all must remain vigilant in our affirmation that this country was founded upon the principles of freedom of religion. We agree with the President’s recent statement before a joint session of the U.S. Congress that:

“Recent threats targeting Jewish community centers and vandalism of Jewish cemeteries, as well as last week’s shooting in Kansas City, remind us that while we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all of its very ugly forms.”

To ensure that Greenwich will not witness any of these insidious acts, the Greenwich Police Department and its Community Impact Section is conducting outreach to various community organizations and are patrolling sensitive areas as a result of this heightened behavior.

The late Selectman, David Theis comes to mind, because he always wore and distributed a 9-11 Memorial pin that read “United We Stand”. We think this message is most powerful in combating the type of behavior exhibited by people who preach hate and discrimination. The Town of Greenwich has zero tolerance.
