Chamber Players to Perform Two Concerts

Diane Lesser

Spring will arrive a few days early for the audience attending the March 12 and 13 concerts of the Chamber Players of the Greenwich Symphony. Diane Lesser will provide a breath of it with her oboe; Ruotao Mao, violinist, will join the Chamber Players as a guest artist, and there will be a performance of one of Beethoven’s “late” string quartets.

Oboist Diane Lesser is one of the top studio recording artists in the country and is principal oboist for the New York Pops, Amici New York, the Greenwich Symphony and the National Chorale. She also plays English horn with the Little Orchestra Society.

Lesser will join the ensemble in three of the five programmed works. Three Pieces for Oboe and String Quartet Op. 2 by 20th century British composer Gustav Holst will open the program, followed by the Oboe Concerto in C major by the Italian composer Domenico Cimarosa. Lesser will also join the strings in an oboe quintet played in an arrangement of the aria “Ah! Non Credea Mararti” from the famous opera La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker) by Vincenzo Bellini.

Mao, a native of Beijing, China, is an active soloist and chamber musician and holds numerous concertmaster posts in the tri-state area. He is one of the founding members of the former Beijing Piano Quartet, winner of the Artists International Chamber Music Series. He recently became concertmaster for the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra. He will join Lesser as well as violinist Susan Hytken-Metcalf, violist David Creswell and cellist Daniel Miller, for the entire program.

In addition, they will be playing the String Trio by Krzysztof Penderecki, and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 12 in E-flat major, Op. 27.

The performances will be on Sunday, March 12 at 4 p.m. at the Round Hill Community Church, 395 Round Hill Rd., and at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 13 at the Bruce Museum.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $5 for students. There will be a wine and cheese reception at each concert. For tickets, call 203-637-4725 or visit greenwichsym.org/chamberplayers
