The popular “Sunday Afternoons Live” concert series returns for its 2017 season with a varied classical offering on Feb. 19, in the First Congregational Church Auditorium. On four Sundays in February and March, live performances by outstanding local and national artists will present a range of classical, jazz and popular music.

The first program features a wide variety of classical pieces for violin and piano performed by two Lithuanian-born virtuosos who will be renewing their history of collaboration over the course of their separate careers in the U.S. and the U.K.

Edita Orlinyte, violin, made her first mark by winning the national Lithuanian competition for young string players at the age of ten, and later joined the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra in 1992, touring throughout Europe and Asia. She recorded a solo album in 2007, made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2008, and has appeared as a soloist with the Gateway and Greenwich Symphony Orchestras. She has been based in Connecticut since 1996.

Rimantas Vingras, piano, graduated from the Moscow Conservatory with a degree in piano performance, and earned a doctoral degree at the College-Conservatory of Music at University of Cincinnati. He has been a popular solo performer in Russia, the United Kingdom, Lithuania, Germany, Switzerland and the U.S., and has taught at Siauliai University, Lithuania and the College – Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Since 2005, Rimantas has been based in London, where he is active as a soloist, accompanist and chamber music player.

The Feb. 19 program includes the Violin Concerto in A Minor by J. S. Bach; Poeme, the most famous work of the French romantic composer Ernest Chausson; “Preludes for Piano Solo” by M.K. Ciurlionis, a leading representative of symbolism and modernism; and the virtuosic Formosa Suite by contemporary composer Albert Markov, where a variety of styles and techniques meet.

“We are delighted to be able to re-unite these two great artists in our own Auditorium to kick off our 2017 Season,” said Craig Symons, Director of Music at First Church. “Their distinguished careers have crossed paths many times, and they always seem to create an emotional and inspiring experience in the concert hall.”

Other programs in the 2017 Season of Sunday Afternoons Live will be:
Feb. 26 – Peter & Will Anderson, jazz saxophonists
March 5 – Wholly Brass, Julliard classmates playing a broad repertoire
March 12 – The Best of First Church Music, featuring FCCOG’s talented soloists

Tickets are $20 for each performance and are available at the door. As with all First Music & Arts programs, school-age youth are free. For more information, visit fccog.org
