On Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m., The Nantucket Project (TNP) Library welcomes Dr. Joanna Bronfman for “Eating Disorders in a Selfie World,” an urgently needed conversation about social pressure in our image-obsessed culture.

Eating disorders, in an age of Instagram, are proliferating. “Every visual suggests that we do not measure up, prods us to eat less and strive toward an unattainable ideal of beauty,” says Dr. Bronfman, a psychologist, educator, and leading eating disorders specialist. “We’re seeing children under 12 in higher numbers than ever, and the rates of teens and young adults seeking treatment keep going up. Many adult women and men also struggle but are less likely to seek help.”

Bronfman will discuss how to:
• Cultivate a healthier mindset by talking about food and body image in a positive way,
• Identify and disrupt the forerunners to anorexia and bulimia before they take root,
• Address “what’s eating you” – the anxiety, loneliness and stress driving behavior,
• Eat for balanced nutrition, and avoid the dangers of “clean eating” and other diets,
• Turn family dinners into meaningful shared experiences, and
• Heal our own relationship with food so we can support our loved ones in theirs.

Bronfman is the Founder and Clinical Director of Backcountry Wellness, LLC, a customized program for the treatment of eating disorders in Greenwich, providing individual therapy, group therapy, dietary and nutritional support.

The Nantucket Project (TNP) Library is located at 123 Mason St. The program is free but RSVP is required and can be made at nantucketproject.com/upcoming-events/fatherhood-workshop.
