friend of ours likes to say, “Once you have done well, it’s time to do good.” He is referring to sharing one’s personal success with others. We could not agree more with that philosophy more, and we hope you do, too. Sharing success can come in many forms. It can be giving your time to volunteer, donating to a charity, or creating a school that provides a world-class education to children that would otherwise not have access to it. In our case, we have chosen to establish the Greenwich Sentinel Foundation, a fully registered and approved 501(c)(3). And we need your help.

The mission of the foundation is to lift up our Greenwich community and give a loud voice to all of the charities and their events that occur throughout the year. Doing this helps us create a greater community, one where we cheer when times are good and seek support when times are more difficult.

You are already seeing some of this work in action. The “Doing Greenwich Good” section is a special insert published and distributed by the foundation as well. It focuses exclusively on the good work being done by our non-profits in Greenwich and by our neighbors and how we can support them. It is the centerpiece of our efforts and is an incredibly important service for all of Greenwich.

If you are receiving the “Five Things to do in Greenwich” daily e-mail, know that the effort to produce it each day is done by the foundation. (If you are not receiving the e-mail, you can sign up on our website.) Now it’s a staple for Greenwich families. “I love the ‘five things’ email” is something we hear over and over again, and we are pleased that it has proved to be useful. Organizers and attendees alike tell us that we make a meaningful contribution to the success of their events.

Over the past two weeks, the foundation has expanded the e-mails to include upcoming events for the weekend and the week, because we were told people need more time to plan. Keeping this e-mail updated daily and being responsive to the requests of the community is a full time job, plus!

Connecting resources to needs is something the Sentinel has been doing since it first launched. In order to be as efficient as possible, the Foundation now connects resources through an extensive network of contacts, the better to help people, support charities, and solve problems. The Sentinel receives these requests when people and organizations have nowhere else to turn. As in the case of organizations like Kids in Crisis, which have limited resources to get their story out, we are grateful to be able to help. The foundation provides charities with free advertising, free public relations help, and financial assistance.

We believe that a comprehensive, up to date Greenwich Community calendar that proactively gathers information is a critical need. The Foundation is working to improve what already exists to make it more responsive and easier to use. The calendar will soon be available for all to see and upload events at www.GreenwichCalendar.org.

We hope you will consider giving generously to the Greenwich Sentinel’s Foundation to support these efforts and other ways we are working to support our non-profits and the great work they do. Next week, there will be an envelope in the paper that you can use to send in a donation, or you may visit our website greenwichsentinel.com and click on the “Donate” button.

Together, we can support and celebrate what makes our community so special. Together, we can continue to lift up our community and each other. Thank you in advance for your support.
