On Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m., Greenwich Library, India Cultural Center of Greenwich, and Veerni will present Somini Sengupta, former New Delhi Bureau Chief for The New York Times and author of The End of Karma: Hope and Fury Among India’s Young.

Sengupta will discuss shifting demographics in India and what it means for the future of South Asia. She will be joined in conversation by Simi Ahuja, Managing Partner SA & Associates and Founder of the South Asian Women’s Leadership Forum. The event will be held in the Library Meeting Room.

In The End of Karma, Sengupta sheds light on the tectonic shifts taking place in India, which has an estimated 300 million youths under the age of 15. According to Sengupta, this makes India home to more children than any country at any time in human history.

Every month until 2030, almost a million Indians will turn 18 and join the labor force. The government must educate and find jobs for these young people and help them climb out of poverty. Sengupta contends that for these youths, Karma, the preordained destiny based on the virtues and sins of one’s previous lives, is no longer set in stone.

Sengupta personalizes this large-scale shift by chronicling the lives of seven young Indians as they try to evade their cultural destiny and untangle themselves from their parent’s ideas of karma.

Somini Ahuja is the managing partner of SA & Associates, a full-service marketing and communications firm that links South Asian corporations with the U.S. business community. In 2003, Simi founded the South Asian Women’s Leadership Forum (SAWLF), the first national, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of South Asian women professionals.

The event is open to all at no charge, but seating is limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. Registration is suggested at greenwichlibrary.org. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. Library Meeting Room doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and refreshments will be served prior to the event.
